Building Near Electricity Infrastructure: Risks and Precautions

When it comes to building a new home or business, the location is a crucial factor. However, building near electricity infrastructure, such as power lines or substations, can raise concerns about potential health risks. In this article, we’ll explore the risks of building near electricity infrastructure and what precautions you can take to protect yourself.

Risks of Building Near Electricity Infrastructure

One of the primary concerns about building near electricity infrastructure is the potential health risks associated with electromagnetic fields (EMF). EMF is a type of radiation that is generated by electrical and electronic devices, including power lines and substations.

Some studies have suggested that exposure to EMF could increase the risk of cancer and other health problems.

Additionally, building near electricity infrastructure could also pose risks to the structural integrity of your property. Power lines and substations generate heat, which could cause damage to buildings if they are located too close.

Precautions for Building Near Electricity Infrastructure

If you are considering building near electricity infrastructure, there are several precautions you can take to protect yourself and your property.

1. Consult with Experts

Before building, it’s crucial to consult with experts who can advise you on the potential risks and precautions to take. This could include EMF surveyors, structural engineers, and other specialists who can provide valuable insights into the risks and precautions you need to take.

2. Consider the Distance

One of the most important precautions you can take when building near electricity infrastructure is to consider the distance between your property and the infrastructure. The further away you are, the less exposure you will have to EMF and the less risk of structural damage.

3. Use Shielding

Another precaution you can take is to use shielding materials to block or absorb EMF. For example, you could use special paint or curtains that are designed to reduce the amount of EMF that enters your property.

4. Design for Structural Integrity

If you are building near electricity infrastructure, it’s essential to design your property with structural integrity in mind. This could include using materials that are resistant to heat and other potential risks associated with the infrastructure.

5. Get an EMF Survey

Finally, it’s crucial to get an EMF survey done on your property before and after construction. An EMF survey can help you identify any potential sources of EMF and provide recommendations for reducing your exposure. This could include recommendations for shielding, distance, and other precautions you can take to protect yourself and your property.

The Importance of Getting an EMF Survey Done

An EMF survey is a measurement of the electromagnetic fields that are present in your home or business. This can help you to identify any sources of EMF that could be harmful to your health or the structural integrity of your property.

During an EMF survey, a professional will use specialised equipment to measure the strength of the electromagnetic fields in your property. They will then provide you with a report that outlines any potential health risks and recommends any steps that you can take to reduce your exposure to EMF.

It’s crucial to note that an EMF survey is not a guarantee of safety. While it can help you to identify potential sources of EMF, there is still no conclusive evidence that building near electricity infrastructure is harmful to human health. Nevertheless, an EMF survey can provide peace of mind and help you to take any necessary steps to protect your health and the structural integrity of your property.

Conclusion

Building near electricity infrastructure can raise concerns about potential health risks and structural damage. However, by taking the necessary precautions and consulting with experts, you can protect yourself and your property. These precautions include considering the distance between your property and the infrastructure, using shielding materials, designing for structural integrity, and getting an EMF survey done before and after construction.

Thank you EMF Inspectrions Ltd for doing our Low Frequency EMF Survey. We had Galin who came to do the survey and he was brilliant. Not only was he polite but very informative and knew his stuff. We were in the process of purchasing a propery next to an electrical sub-station and was worried that the EMF could be penetrating the property. Galin went round the entire property inside and out, down the alley and in the garden and took readings. He explained the different levels of readings and reassured us that all of our readings were below the government guidelines. We are so pleased with the service. We booked on a Monday and had the survey on Wednesday (we could of had Tuesday if we wanted). The report was with us on Thursday which is brillianty written out to explain the readings for people who are not "experts". Would highly recommend using EMF Inspections Ltd to anyone. Thank you again!
