EMFs at Workplace in the UK – Frequently Asked Questions

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are all around us, from the natural EMFs produced by the sun and the earth, to the man-made EMFs from our electronic devices. While EMFs have been a part of our daily lives for decades, there is still much we don’t know about their effects on our health, particularly in the workplace.

In this article, we’ll explore some frequently asked questions about EMFs at workplace in the UK, including what they are, how they can affect us, and the importance of getting an EMF survey done.

What are EMFs?

EMFs are invisible lines of force that surround all electrical devices, including power lines, electrical wiring, and electronic devices. They are a type of radiation, similar to radio waves, but with a much higher frequency and energy level.

How can EMFs affect us?

The potential health effects of EMFs have been a topic of debate for many years. Some studies have linked exposure to high levels of EMFs with an increased risk of cancer, while others have found no conclusive evidence of a link. Additionally, there is evidence to suggest that exposure to EMFs can lead to other health problems, such as headaches, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.

While the long-term effects of EMF exposure are still being studied, it’s clear that some people are more sensitive to EMFs than others. Individuals who are particularly sensitive to EMFs may experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and skin irritation when exposed to even low levels of EMFs.

What are the sources of EMFs in the workplace?

There are a number of potential sources of EMFs in the workplace, including:

1. Electrical wiring and lighting

2. Computers and other electronic devices

3. Mobile phones and Wi-Fi networks

4. Electrical equipment, such as transformers and generators

5. Power lines and electrical substations located near the workplace

While some workplaces may have higher levels of EMFs than others, all workplaces have some level of EMF exposure. It’s important to identify the sources of EMFs in your workplace in order to determine if any action needs to be taken to reduce exposure levels.

What is an EMF survey?

An EMF survey is a comprehensive evaluation of the EMF levels in a workplace or other environment. During an EMF survey, a trained professional will use specialized equipment to measure the strength and frequency of the EMFs in the area. The results of the survey can then be used to determine if any action needs to be taken to reduce exposure levels.

Why is it important to get an EMF survey done?

Getting an EMF survey done is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, it can help to identify any potential health risks associated with high levels of EMF exposure in the workplace. This information can then be used to take action to reduce exposure levels and protect the health of employees.

Secondly, an EMF survey can help to identify any potential sources of EMFs in the workplace that may be causing interference with electronic devices or equipment. This can help to improve the performance and reliability of these devices, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

Finally, getting an EMF survey done can help to demonstrate to employees and other stakeholders that the company takes health and safety seriously. By taking proactive steps to identify and mitigate potential health risks, companies can improve their reputation and create a safer and healthier workplace for their employees.

What should you do if an EMF survey identifies high levels of EMFs in the workplace?

If an EMF survey identifies high levels of EMFs in the workplace, there are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce exposure levels. These may include:

Reorganizing the workspace to reduce exposure to EMF sources

Shielding EMF sources to reduce exposure levels

Using low EMF emitting equipment and devices

Implementing policies to limit exposure time

Providing training and information to employees about EMFs and their potential health risks.

It’s important to work with a qualified professional to develop a plan to reduce EMF exposure in the workplace. Depending on the nature of the workplace and the level of exposure, it may be necessary to make significant changes to the workspace or equipment to achieve acceptable exposure levels.

What regulations are in place to protect workers from EMFs in the UK?

In the UK, there are a number of regulations in place to protect workers from EMFs. The Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016 set out requirements for employers to assess the risk of EMF exposure in the workplace and take steps to reduce exposure levels where necessary.

Employers are required to take action to reduce exposure levels if they exceed the exposure limit values set out in the regulations. These values are based on recommendations from the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and are designed to protect workers from potential health risks associated with high levels of EMF exposure.

What should you do if you’re concerned about EMFs in the workplace?

If you’re concerned about EMFs in the workplace, the first step is to speak to your employer or health and safety representative. They may be able to provide information about the measures that have been taken to assess and mitigate potential risks.

If you believe that your workplace may have high levels of EMFs, you may want to consider requesting an EMF survey to be conducted. This can help to identify any potential risks and enable your employer to take action to reduce exposure levels.

It’s important to note that not all health problems can be attributed to EMF exposure, and it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional if you experience any symptoms that may be related to EMFs.

Conclusion

EMFs are a part of our daily lives, and exposure levels can vary significantly depending on the environment. While the long-term health effects of EMF exposure are still being studied, it’s important to take steps to reduce exposure levels where possible, particularly in the workplace.

Getting an EMF survey done can help to identify potential risks and enable employers to take action to reduce exposure levels. By taking proactive steps to protect the health and safety of employees, companies can create a safer and healthier workplace for everyone.

Whether you’re an employee or an employer, it’s essential to take EMFs seriously and ensure that you’re doing everything possible to minimize potential risks. By implementing policies and procedures to limit exposure and investing in low EMF emitting equipment, you can create a safer working environment for everyone.

In conclusion, while the long-term health effects of EMFs are still being studied, it’s clear that exposure to high levels of EMFs can pose a potential risk to human health. Employers have a responsibility to assess and mitigate these risks in the workplace, and employees should be aware of potential risks and take steps to minimize exposure.

If you’re concerned about EMFs in your workplace, don’t hesitate to speak to your employer or request an EMF survey. By working together, we can create a safer and healthier workplace for everyone.

Thank you EMF Inspectrions Ltd for doing our Low Frequency EMF Survey. We had Galin who came to do the survey and he was brilliant. Not only was he polite but very informative and knew his stuff. We were in the process of purchasing a propery next to an electrical sub-station and was worried that the EMF could be penetrating the property. Galin went round the entire property inside and out, down the alley and in the garden and took readings. He explained the different levels of readings and reassured us that all of our readings were below the government guidelines. We are so pleased with the service. We booked on a Monday and had the survey on Wednesday (we could of had Tuesday if we wanted). The report was with us on Thursday which is brillianty written out to explain the readings for people who are not "experts". Would highly recommend using EMF Inspections Ltd to anyone. Thank you again!
