Shocking or Safe? The Pros and Cons of Buying a House Near an Electricity Pylon in the UK

Buying a house is one of the most significant financial decisions you will ever make. It’s an investment in your future, and you want to ensure that your investment is a sound one. However, buying a house near an electricity pylon can raise concerns about the potential health risks associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

EMFs are a type of radiation that can be produced by any electrical device. They are invisible to the human eye, but they can penetrate through walls, floors, and even the human body. Overexposure to EMFs has been linked to a range of health problems, including cancer, depression, and anxiety.

So, should you buy a house near an electricity pylon? Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons.

Pros:

1. Affordability

One of the significant advantages of buying a house near an electricity pylon is affordability. Properties situated near pylons are often priced lower than similar properties in other locations. This is because many people are put off by the proximity to the pylon and the potential health risks associated with EMF exposure.

2. Unobstructed Views

Another advantage of buying a house near an electricity pylon is the unobstructed views. Pylons are usually built on high ground to ensure that they can transmit electricity over long distances. This means that properties located near pylons often have stunning views of the surrounding landscape, with no other buildings or structures to obstruct the view.

3. No Neighbors

If you’re looking for privacy, a house near an electricity pylon may be the perfect choice for you. Pylons are often situated in remote locations, with few houses nearby. This means that you’ll have plenty of space to yourself and won’t have to worry about noisy neighbors.

Cons:

1. Health Risks

The most significant disadvantage of buying a house near an electricity pylon is the potential health risks associated with EMF exposure. While the scientific community has yet to reach a consensus on the effects of EMFs on human health, some studies have linked overexposure to EMFs with a range of health problems, including cancer, depression, and anxiety.

2. Difficulty Reselling

Buying a house near an electricity pylon can also make it challenging to sell your property in the future. Many people are put off by the proximity to the pylon and the potential health risks associated with EMF exposure. This means that you may struggle to find a buyer willing to pay a fair price for your property.

3. Aesthetics

Electricity pylons are not the most attractive structures, and they can have a negative impact on the aesthetics of the surrounding area. Many people find pylons unsightly and would prefer not to have them in their line of sight.

So, should you buy a house near an electricity pylon? Ultimately, it’s up to you to weigh the pros and cons and decide what’s best for you and your family. However, if you are considering purchasing a property near a pylon, it’s essential to get an EMF survey done before making your final decision.

An EMF survey will measure the levels of EMFs in and around your property and provide you with a report detailing the results. This report will give you a better understanding of the potential health risks associated with EMF exposure and help you make an informed decision about whether or not to buy the property.

It’s worth noting that even if the EMF survey shows that the levels of EMFs in and around your property are within safe limits, some people may still be concerned about the potential health risks. If this is the case for you, it’s important to consider the potential impact on your quality of life and peace of mind.

On the other hand, if you’re considering purchasing a property close to an electricity pylon, there are a few benefits that come with it. First and foremost, properties located near pylons are usually less expensive compared to other properties in the area. This means that you can potentially save a significant amount of money on your purchase.

Additionally, properties near pylons often have larger plots of land, providing more outdoor space and potentially better views. You may also have less neighbours and more privacy, which can be a big plus for some homebuyers.

However, it’s important to consider the potential downsides before making a decision. As mentioned earlier, living near an electricity pylon can result in exposure to EMFs, which have been linked to various health concerns. This can be particularly concerning if you have young children, are pregnant, or have other health conditions that may be exacerbated by EMF exposure.

Moreover, some homebuyers may find that living near an electricity pylon can affect the resale value of the property. Not everyone is comfortable with the idea of living close to a pylon, so it may be more difficult to find buyers if you decide to sell in the future.

Ultimately, whether or not to purchase a property near an electricity pylon is a personal decision that depends on your individual circumstances and priorities. However, if you are seriously considering buying a property near a pylon, it’s crucial to get an EMF survey done before making a final decision.

An EMF survey will provide you with a comprehensive report of the EMF levels in and around the property. The survey will also identify any potential sources of EMFs, such as power lines, transformers, and appliances, and provide recommendations for reducing exposure if necessary.

Additionally, an EMF survey can give you peace of mind and help you make an informed decision about whether the property is the right choice for you and your family.

In conclusion, purchasing a property near an electricity pylon in the UK can have its pros and cons. While the potential cost savings and larger outdoor space may be attractive, the risks associated with EMF exposure cannot be ignored. It’s important to carefully consider these factors before making a decision and to get an EMF survey done to assess the levels of exposure.

Ultimately, the decision to buy a property near an electricity pylon is a personal one that should be based on your individual circumstances and priorities. By weighing the pros and cons and getting an EMF survey done, you can make an informed decision that is right for you and your family’s health and well-being.

Thank you EMF Inspectrions Ltd for doing our Low Frequency EMF Survey. We had Galin who came to do the survey and he was brilliant. Not only was he polite but very informative and knew his stuff. We were in the process of purchasing a propery next to an electrical sub-station and was worried that the EMF could be penetrating the property. Galin went round the entire property inside and out, down the alley and in the garden and took readings. He explained the different levels of readings and reassured us that all of our readings were below the government guidelines. We are so pleased with the service. We booked on a Monday and had the survey on Wednesday (we could of had Tuesday if we wanted). The report was with us on Thursday which is brillianty written out to explain the readings for people who are not "experts". Would highly recommend using EMF Inspections Ltd to anyone. Thank you again!
